How to Fight Frizz This Summer

Summer is quickly approaching, and with that comes sunshine, beach vacations, and warm weather. But it also brings in an unwelcome guest – frizzy hair. While there are many causes of frizzy hair that differs based on your hair type, we have a few basic rules that will get anyone’s locks on the right track to a smooth, chic appearance, even in the muggiest weather. Here are 8 tips to take into account as you battle the dreaded summer humidity.

1. Trim Your Hair Regularly

Regular trims are the key to minimizing frizz. Split and dead ends are one of the leading causes for the appearance of frizz, especially for those who use coloring and bleaching treatments as these can be damaging to the hair shaft. Routinely eliminating these frizz risk factors is the first step on a journey to healthy, silky hair this season. Talk with your stylist about how much you need trimmed off to start your frizz care journey.

2. Use Hydrating Shampoos and Conditioners

Hydration is crucial when it comes to minimizing frizz. Dry hair soaks up moisture in the air, which can cause the hair shaft to expand, creating frizz. By providing your locks with plenty of moisture to begin with, you’ll reduce dryness and pesky flyaways. Look for products with ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, and coconut oil that match your hair concerns. Products will differ based on your hair type.

3. Use a Leave-In Conditioner

For an extra boost of moisture, try finding a leave-in conditioner that works for your hair. When it comes to leave-in conditioner, your hair type plays a large role in how much and where to put in your hair. If you have thinner or straight hair, try avoiding the top of the hair and focusing on the ends, since they tend to be drier. For thicker, curlier hair, apply it to wet or damp hair from the middle of the shaft to the ends. If your hair is curly, explore curling creams and gels that will both minimize frizz and enhance curl definition.

4. Avoid Over-Washing

If you’re a former sufferer of oily hair, you might feel the urge to wash your hair every day. While this isn’t always necessarily a problem, over-washing your hair can actually dry out your scalp by stripping it of its natural oils. How often you should be washing your hair to optimize results will vary depending on your hair type, but it is often recommended to wash it every other day to once a week. Finding a routine that works for you may take some trial and error, but will be rewarding in the end as you notice silky smooth results.

5. Ditch the Hairbrush

Many use hairbrushes daily without a second thought, but the truth is, most hairbrushes can actually damage your hair by forming split ends and breakage. Combs have wider space between them, providing a gentler detangling process and preventing breakage. Try using a comb on damp hair to lessen damage and avoid frizz.

6. Dry Your Hair Strategically

There are many ways to dry your hair – air-drying, towel-drying, blow-drying – but which is the best? This fully depends on the thickness and type of your hair.

For straight hair that is thin or thick, air or simple blow drying on a cool setting is the way to go. Use a microfiber towel to bring the hair from soaking wet to damp before using one of these methods.

For wavy or curlier hair, its’ best to use a curl cream or gel right out the shower, scrunching with a microfiber towel, then using a diffusing attachment to blow dry the hair. Blow dryers can dry out curly, low-porosity hair if not used gently. This will most prevent frizzy unruly hair while perfecting your curls.

7. Avoid Heat

It’s no secret that heat-styling tools, like straightening irons, curling wands, and blowdryers, can severely damage your hair. While we recommend avoiding these tools whenever possible, use a heat-protectant spray if you do use a styling tool. Heat dehydrates the hair and can eventually dehydrate it to the point of no return if you don’t take precaution.  Use blow dryers on a cool setting. Additionally, using hot water in the shower can damage the hair over time, so try to stick to cool or warm temperatures when possible.

8. Sleep On Silk

Cotton pillowcases and sheets form a lot of friction on your hair during your sleep, which is why you should swap it for silk alternatives. In addition to reducing friction, it makes your hair shiny. You can also sleep in a bonnet if you don’t like the feel of silk on your body. Sleep in a protective hairstyle that is loose and comfortable.
